Converting Oz to GSM and GSM to OZ

· OZ below refer to Ounces/Square Yard (Should technically be wrote OZ/SQ YD). Just using OZ is technically incorrect, but it is very common.
·
G below refers to Grams/Square Meter (Should technically be wrote GSM or gsm). Just using G is technically incorrect, but it is very common.
·
GSM or gsm is Grams/Square Meter

All are measures of DENSITY

OZ (Ounces per Square Yard) to GSM (Grams per Square Meter)

Often mistakenly referred to as OZ to G

Or ~ x34

1 Oz/Sq Yd = 33.9057475 GSM

1 GSM = 0.0294935247 Oz/Sq Yd

1 Oz/Sq Yd ~ 34 GSM

There is NO conversion from GSM to MIL or from MIL to GSM (One is a density and one is a thickness). I can’t tell you how much someone weighs if you only tell me how tall they are. However, I can make a generalized guess.

Problem / Issue of Epson 11880 Defective Ink Batches

Some people have had problems with certain Epson 11880 wide format printer ink cartridges. If you have the issue of your cartridge not registering in your printer, contact Epson tech support to see if the Lot Number on the ink is from the defective batch.

We recommend calling Epson Priority Service Support. This is usually better than calling your distributor. Call (562) 276-1305 *Same number that is in the back of your printer's manual*. Have your printer's serial number ready before your call. Press 2 for Pro series printers. Press 2 again to talk to an actual tech support agent.

Good luck! Comment below if you have had this issue and any advice you can offer...

The Rasterbater - Make Huge Mosaics from your desktop printer

I found this a few months back and thought it was really cool. For everyone who doesn't own a wide format printer, this is the next best option...

http://homokaasu.org/rasterbator/

"The Rasterbator creates huge, rasterized images from any picture. Upload an image, print the resulting multi-page pdf file and assemble the pages into extremely cool looking poster up to 20 meters in size."

Enjoy.

Power to the Poster -- Prints Now Available from Elevate Printing

Elevate Printing has teamed up with PowerToThePoster.org, the Match Factory, and scores of designers to help launch the Power to the Poster Citizen Gallery.

From the Groundswell Blog:

More than 60 designers and activists collaborated on Power to the Poster, and I was honored to have been invited (along with a number of other friendly faces) to sit on the judging panel that helped curate the selection of 30 posters now available at Citizen Gallery. Citizen Gallery The prints were selected from the most moving designs submitted to PowerToThePoster.org, and are made available as 15×24 and 24×38 prints by Chicago’s Elevate Printing. Artists receive 50% of the funds, and the printers are paid the other half. The organizers are also asking that each buyer contribute half the price of their purchase to a cause they support.

Its Great to Give Photo Credits!

I came across an image the other day in Google Images that had been picked off one of the Flickr accounts I contribute to. Its great to see someone (RoundPegg.com) actually using Flickr and crediting the original creator. This is also a great, creative use of the an image not originally created for the purpose of an article.

Summa Cutters - Unique Applications Photo Contest

Summa ( www.summausa.com) is having a contest for unique projects you have done with a Summa Cutter. More info at: Summa Photo Contest - http://www.summausa.com/contest/

Summa cutters have many applications, from making custom stickers to making your own fathead like removable wall graphic. These are great complimentary machines to printers like the Epson GS6000 solvent printer that do not have any built in cutter or blade. They can also replace expensive die cut applications (there is no need to make a custom die for each shape, which can save thousands of dollars).

I will be excited to see what people have been doing with these amazing automated cutting machines.

Epson 3800 Refurbs Printers - Ink Charging Problem

If you are having problems setting up a refurbished Epson 3800 printer, read the following about the experience I had.

Upon opening the printer and putting all the inks in, and powering the printer up, the normal ink charging cycles did not start (I've set up a few of these printers brand new). The front of the 3800 will say that the printer has 100% of ink (all the ink bars will be full). When you charge a new Epson Stylus 3800, it leaves you with about 70% in the cartridges (the remainder mostly goes in the lines between the cartridges and the printer head.

Epson tests all the refurbished 3800's before they send them out, so they already charged the lines (think of this a gift of about $100 of ink).

The first print you should do once you open the printer is a nozzle check. If they are all full and there is 8 different colors of them (see above image) then you have passed the first test. You should change black inks on the front of the Epson 3800 at this point. If you were on Photo Black, switch it to Matte Black Ink, or vice-versa. Now run the nozzle check again. If it looks good, you should be good to go.

I had to do 2 power cleans (one on both black settings) before the nozzles all began firing. It took one last one and it has worked perfectly since. Any questions or need help? Contact me or leave a comment below.

Bluecubit releases Imagenest 1.2.1

http://www.bluecubit.com/downloads.html

Its an awesome program that I now use almost daily. I found that the newest version didn't save my settings from V1.1 (page size settings, printer dialogue box things, etc.) I have contacted them regarding that and will post when I figure out what caused it. Other than that, ImageNest has been a very solid program.

They are also looking for features requests if you are a current or potential user.

The main thing I would like to see is an option to save the layouts for later, so you can prep when you are not in front of your printer. A little greater control of the cut marks wouldn't hurt either.

Definitely check out their demo if you haven't yet.

Joe WV Event at Threadless Gallery in Chicago

Joe VW has a solo gallery coming up this Friday, April 3rd 2009, at the Threadless Gallery in Chicago. If you are free you should check it out.

Hey there! I just thought I'd let you know I have my first solo art exhibit at the Threadless Store. The opening party is April 3rd from 7-9pm. If you can't make it that night it will be up the entire month. Here's a little blurb about my show

"Between the Mountains and the Volcano explores the continuously developing relationship between color and space. I use bold, contrasting colors that work in tandem with geometric shapes to create abstract visions of everyday life. From intensely colored patterns that create mountains to abstract geometric images and deconstructed digital products, my illustrations are reflections of the influences of both nature and current pop culture. My hope is to create work that is relatable to everyone and speaks light heartedly about life in the current digital age."

Official Epson Statement on Refurb Printers

I installed my Refurbished Epson 3800 printer last night and I was very impressed that it came with a full set of 80 mL cartridges (not the starter set!). I ended up paying $699 out the door. Not a bad deal considering the ink + maintenance cartridge it contains would be almost $500 alone.

Here is Epson's offical statement on Refurbished Printers:

Refurbished Products:
All sales are final. These are products that have been returned to Epson. They have been inspected and tested to ensure they perform properly. Some may have minor blemishes due to handling. They are available only while quantities last. Refurbished products may or may not contain a media pack or the same software package as new models. In order to provide these savings and to move final quantities, we cannot accept returns unless the product arrived damaged or defective in which case your remedy is replacement with the same model or equivalent. See Terms of Sale and Conditions.
